Outreach: Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium

posted ‎‎Oct 23, 2009 3:52 PM‎‎ by Leslie Bunt   [ updated ‎‎Oct 23, 2009 3:57 PM‎‎ ]

Six members of Charger Rocket Works attended the 2nd Annual Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium held in Huntsville, AL on October 20-21. This symposium was held by the American Astronomical Society in conjunction with the Huntsville National Space Club and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. This year's topic was "Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter in Space." Student volunteers presented information about the USLI competition and the Charger Rocket Works team to the symposium audience. We were very honored to have the opportunity to meet Charles Bolden, NASA Administrator, and he was very excited to see so many hard working students!

Many influential people spoke during the symposium, including: Robert Lightfoot, Director of NASA MSFC; Mark Geyer, Orion Project Manager at NASA JSC; Alan Ladwig, from the office of Public Liaison of NASA Headquarters; Charlie Precourt, Vice President of ATK Space Launch Systems; Jim Maser, President of Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne; and Andreas Diekmann, Head of the Washington Office of the European Space Agency.

Meeting with the Dean of Engineering

posted ‎‎Oct 12, 2009 10:14 AM‎‎ by Leslie Bunt   [ updated ‎‎Oct 12, 2009 10:58 AM‎‎ ]

Last week two members of Charger Rocket Works meet with UAHuntsville’s Dean of Engineering, Dr. Phillip Farrington. Dr. Farrington has a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Management from Oklahoma State University.

Charger Rocket Work’s outreach program caught the eye of Dr. Farrington and he invited us to meet with him to discuss our future. Preliminary discussions focused on introducing an outreach plan that will be heavily involved with UAHuntsville’s engineering activities and recruitment events. We will have the opportunity to work with other student organizations on campus, including the Engineering Student Council. Dr. Farrington also introduced us to the Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Ms. Sandra Patterson, and we will be receiving support from her department over the next year. Dr. Farrington and his staff are very enthusiastic about working with CRW this year to create a “model” for other student organizations within the College of Engineering. These partnerships will provide us with many new resources and will certainly increase our chance for success!

Charger Rocket Works would like to thank Dr. Farrington for his interest in our project!

Outreach: LCA Career Day

posted ‎‎Oct 1, 2009 12:08 PM‎‎ by Leslie Bunt   [ updated ‎‎Oct 23, 2009 3:52 PM‎‎ ]

Several members of Charger Rocket Works attended a Career Day held at Life Christian Academy (LCA) in Harvest, Alabama on September 26. This was a great opportunity for LCA students to learn about different careers that are popular in the Huntsville area and get information from local community colleges and universities.  Students were able to interact with engineers, military personnel, computer scientists, police officers, firefighters, nurses, home repair specialists, and many others. There were representatives from UAHuntsville and Wallace State Community College present to give out brochures and applications. Our team showed great enthusiasm and had two rockets on display. Charger Rocket Works was happy to attend and had a great time!

Mission Concept Review

Tonight the team will be presenting a Mission Concept Review (MCR) for the first time! Last year's team leads and mentors are invited. This will prepare us for the MCR presentation to UAHuntsville's engineering faculty later this month. This review will also help Charger Rocket Works write a proposal to the NASA USLI review board.

The launch was also a test launch of H-IIB Launch Vehicle. H-IIB is the youngest and most powerful brother of H-II family, which is flagship rocket of Japan.

- Do you know? -
UAHuntsville Propulsion Research Center was in charge of uncertainty analysis and prototype design of LE-7, the first stage main engine of H-II Launch Vehicle.
